Swim: Klochkova wins first gold medal

BRISBANE, Aug 29 Reuters - Ukraine's Yana Klochkova claimed the first gold medal of
the Goodwill Games when she won the women's 800 metres swimming final today.

The dual Olympic champion fought off a dose of flu and a bad case of jet lag to add
another international title to her rapidly growing collection.

Klochkova, 19, trailed American Adrienne Binder through the first 700m before surging
clear on the final lap to win the gold in eight minutes 38.71 seconds.

Jamaica's Janelle Atkinson took the silver in 8:39.71 as Binder faded to finish third in 8:40.00.

Klochkova also won her 400m individual medley race but could not prevent her European
All Stars team from losing their round-robin match against the United States, with the
Americans taking the tie 82-67.
