Fed: PM congratulates new president of Philippines

CANBERRA, Jan 20 AAP - Prime Minister John Howard today congratulated the newly installed
president of the Philippines, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Mr Howard said he welcomed the apparently peaceful and constitutional resolution of
the political crisis in the Philippines.

Former president Joseph Estrada resigned today after the high court removed his power
and tens of thousands of protesters flocked to his home.

Ms Macapagal-Arroyo, who was Estrada's vice president, assumed office immediately.
