SA: Conservationist welcomes moves on donated land

A conservationist says tax deductibility for land donated for conservation will help
save Australia's endangered wildlife.

Dr JOHN WAMSLEY says new legislation, passed by the Senate last week, allows for tax
deductibility on donated land and for capital gains tax exemptions.

He says both measures will make conservation more cost-effective.

Dr WAMSLEY says the legislation means land that may otherwise have been cleared and
further degraded may now be set aside for conservation purposes.

This will help ensure the survival of endangered wildlife.

He says while the tax deductibility in the legislation is only for five years, the
conservation benefits will be realised for many years more.

Dr WAMSLEY says making a profit from land set aside for conservation will be an on-going
growth area for Australia with its rich biodiversity and international tourist appeal.
