NSW: Marathon talks over rail system end

Marathon talks have ended between the New South Wales government and unions over train
drivers refusing to work overtime.

The overtime issue and drivers being forced to undertake medical tests and training
have forced the cancellation of dozens of rail services each day this week because of
driver shortages.

Transport Minister MICHAEL COSTA and the Rail, Tram and Bus Union emerged from six
hours of talks shortly after 2 pm (AEDT).

Mr COSTA's refused to comment until he's taken a proposal to Premier BOB CARR, but
says the talks were positive.

It's not yet clear whether the parties have resolved the matter.

A union spokesman says train drivers hope the premier will be sympathetic to their cause.
