Fed: Abbott proposes "rational" population projection figure

Opposition Leader TONY ABBOTT'S rejected the government's future population target
.. and says under the coalition an expanded Productivity Commission would calculate a
rational projection figure.

He says Australia's largest cities are choking on their traffic and the environment
is under pressure everywhere.

Prime Minister KEVIN RUDD'S announced a population target of 36 million by 2050 ..

but based on current immigration rates .. Mr ABBOTT says Australia's population will reach
42 million by then.
